Originally founded as the Primera División Femenina, the league became fully professional and adopted the Liga F name in 2022. The Liga F season runs from autumn to spring, with clubs competing in a traditional league format to determine the champion and qualification for European competitions. Matches are played at stadiums such as Estadi Johan Cruyff, Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano, Riyadh Air Metropolitano, San Mamés, and Reale Arena.
The league is home to many of the world's top footballers, including Alexia Putellas, Aitana Bonmatí, Patri Guijarro, Salma Paralluelo, Caroline Graham Hansen, Ewa Pajor, Linda Caicedo, and Alba Redondo. Organised by Liga F under the authority of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Liga F is widely regarded as one of the strongest women's football leagues in Europe.
