A bold shake-up on the horizon

Germany's top women's football division could look dramatically different from 2027/28, with plans under serious consideration to decide the league title through a playoff system rather than a traditional points-based finish.

Since its separation from the DFB, the Women's Bundesliga has been undergoing a strategic rethink under FBL President Katharina Kiel. The goal: make the competition more exciting, more watchable, and commercially stronger.

Two models on the table

The restructuring proposals centre on a tighter schedule with fewer matchdays and standardised kick-off times. Two championship formats are being debated. The first would see the table-topping side crowned after 26 games. The second - and more radical option - would add seven playoff matches to settle the title.

Under the playoff model, the top four clubs would contest semi-finals, with winners meeting in a final. The two losing semi-finalists would then face off for a Champions League qualifying berth, adding extra jeopardy deep into the campaign.

Relegation revamp

Changes to the drop zone are also proposed. Teams finishing 11th and 12th would play each other, with the victor staying up. The defeated side would get a reprieve - a second-chance tie against the winner of a third-versus-fourth playoff from the second division.

Bayern chief unconvinced

Not everyone is on board. Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen has voiced a traditionalist stance, insisting the side atop the standings deserves the championship. Conversations among clubs remain ongoing, as OneFootball reports.

TV deal context

Current broadcast contracts run through the 2024/25 season, delivering a combined 5.2 million euros annually to league clubs. The next rights cycle aligns with the 2027/28 campaign - precisely when any new format would take effect.
