Rain forces Monday resumption

The Washington DC Open final between Jessica Pegula and Alexandra Eala will resume today at noon local time (1600 GMT) after persistent rain washed out Sunday's scheduled conclusion.

Pegula holds the advantage, leading 6-4, 2-1 at the second changeover of the second set when play was halted at 3:57 p.m. local time.

Delays plagued the day

The final had originally been due to start at midday on Sunday but was pushed back to approximately 3 p.m. owing to scattered thunderstorms across the Washington DC area. When the rain returned mid-set, officials had little choice but to suspend proceedings entirely.

What's at stake

For Eala, victory would represent a landmark moment - a maiden WTA Tour title. Pegula, meanwhile, is chasing her 12th career title and a second triumph in the American capital.
