Teenager stuns field in Memphis

Sixteen-year-old Kristina Liutova has written herself into the record books by claiming the inaugural Memphis Classic title, defeating Darja Vidmanova 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 in a final that lasted just over two hours.

The result makes Liutova the youngest active player on the WTA Tour to hold a tour-level title - and only the second-youngest ever to win one on debut, behind Mirjana Lucic.

From qualifier to champion

Liutova entered the tournament ranked a modest No. 229 in the world and had to battle through qualifying just to reach the main draw. Once there, she dispatched a series of formidable opponents, including top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, who retired during their encounter. A gutsy comeback victory over Maja Joint further underlined the teenager's composure under pressure.

Rankings surge and career-best payday

The title is projected to catapult Liutova to a career-high ranking of No. 126, propelled by the 268 ranking points she accumulated across the week. Financially, the rewards are equally significant: her winner's cheque of $37,390 nearly doubles her total career earnings to date, as Tennis365 reports. Finalist Vidmanova collected $22,125 for her efforts.
