Sabalenka's title defence under threat

Aryna Sabalenka heads into the 2026 US Open as defending champion, but her recent form raises serious questions. The Belarusian hasn't claimed a major since the 2023 Australian Open, and 2026 has been far from kind - a final defeat to Elena Rybakina followed by early exits at both the French Open and Wimbledon.

Her hard-court preparation hasn't inspired confidence either. Sabalenka failed to reach the quarter-finals at both the Montreal and Cincinnati events, and a mixed doubles outing alongside Novak Djokovic offered little consolation.

Rivals sense vulnerability

Former player Johanna Konta believes the field can smell blood. Konta suggested Sabalenka's aura of dominance has faded, giving opponents renewed confidence when facing her. That psychological shift could prove decisive in New York.

The women's draw is stacked with contenders. Elena Rybakina's fitness remains a question mark, but Coco Gauff arrives in strong form. Konta also tipped Marta Kostyuk as a dark horse capable of capturing her first Grand Slam title.

Record prize money on the line

First-round action at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center begins on 30 August, with the women's singles final scheduled for 12 September. The total prize pool has been set at a record $108 million, with each singles champion taking home $5.5 million.
