Season-ending blow for Las Vegas

NaLyssa Smith's campaign is over. The Las Vegas Aces confirmed the forward will miss the remainder of the WNBA season after sustaining a left leg injury - a devastating setback for a side chasing another championship.

Smith went down with a non-contact injury while driving to the basket during the Aces' clash with Toronto. It's the kind of play that immediately sends a chill through any team, and the diagnosis has confirmed the worst fears.

A standout season cut short

The 2022 No. 2 overall draft pick had been delivering arguably her best basketball this year. Across 38 starts, she averaged 11.7 points and 6.4 rebounds while shooting an impressive 63.8% from the field. Having previously suited up for Indiana and Dallas, Smith had found a home in Las Vegas.

Title hopes take a hit

The Aces sit third in the WNBA standings at 26-13 and now face the prospect of a deep postseason run without one of their most reliable contributors. Las Vegas have one more home fixture against Toronto before the FIBA World Cup break pauses proceedings.

Three Aces players are set to represent the United States at the World Cup, with WNBA action resuming on 17 September. Las Vegas will have just four regular-season games remaining to settle their rotation before the playoffs.
