The WNBA playoff picture is crystallising rapidly as the league heads towards its FIBA World Cup hiatus. Seven franchises - Minnesota, Golden State, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Indiana, New York and Washington - have already punched their tickets to the postseason.
That leaves one seat at the table, and Dallas is poised to grab it. The Wings are on the cusp of wrapping up the eighth and final playoff berth, though the seeding battle remains fierce. Just 1.5 games separate the second-placed Valkyries from Indiana in fifth, while a single game is all that divides sixth-placed New York from Dallas in eighth.
The stakes are significant. The top four seeds earn homecourt advantage for the opening best-of-three round. From there, the semis shift to best-of-five before a best-of-seven WNBA Finals.
Teams will down tools from 31 August to 17 September for the World Cup window. Indiana, sitting fifth, recently navigated a gruelling road stretch, emerging with a solid 3-2 record. The Fever finish the regular season with three of their last five games at home, including a tantalising home-and-away series against league leaders Minnesota.
Minnesota hold firm at the top of the latest power poll, with Las Vegas second and Atlanta third. Dallas slot in eighth, ahead of Chicago, Portland and Phoenix. Angel Reese claimed Player of the Week honours after averaging 24 points, 11.3 rebounds and 3.7 steals for Atlanta. Shakira Austin, Paige Bueckers and Olivia Miles also received votes.
Expansion sides Portland and Toronto have unveiled their mascots: Rose the dragon represents the Fire, while the Tempo introduced Dez the tortoise and Dot the hare.
The marquee match-up this week pits Minnesota against Atlanta - a showdown between two of the league's elite before the World Cup break.
