Phoenix Mercury's dismal 2026 campaign has claimed another casualty. With the team's postseason hopes officially extinguished following a defeat to the Atlanta Dream - and a woeful 2-8 start to the season still hanging over them - the organisation has agreed to buy out veteran forward DeWanna Bonner's contract.
The 39-year-old is now an unrestricted free agent, free to pursue a move to a genuine title contender as the business end of the WNBA season approaches.
Bonner's CV speaks for itself. Drafted fifth overall by the Mercury back in 2009, she has claimed two championships and earned the Sixth Player of the Year award on three separate occasions. After spending time with the Connecticut Sun, she returned to Phoenix last season and featured in the WNBA Finals.
This term, she has posted averages of 10.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game - respectable numbers for a player in the twilight of her career.
Bonner sits third on the all-time WNBA scoring list and is just the third player in league history to surpass 8,000 career points. She has spoken warmly about her time in Phoenix but acknowledged uncertainty about what lies ahead, with retirement looming as a real possibility.
