Sophie Cunningham brushed off the drama and let her basketball do the talking as the Indiana Fever faced the Chicago Sky in a fixture loaded with subplot. Both Cunningham and Sky head coach Tyler Marsh played down the significance of the rematch, insisting it was simply another game on the schedule.

The backstory

The tension stemmed from the teams' 8 August clash, when DiJonai Carrington knocked Cunningham to the floor during a layup attempt. The foul was upgraded to a Flagrant 2, resulting in Carrington's ejection. In the aftermath, Carrington posted on social media using the phrase "WHITE PRIVILEGE" - though she later clarified she was not attributing the foul call to that issue.

Both players take the court

Carrington had been listed as questionable with a left foot injury but was cleared following warmups. She and Cunningham both entered the contest with 3:04 remaining in the opening quarter. By half-time, Cunningham had contributed three points across six minutes, while Carrington posted four points on 2-for-7 shooting in over 11 minutes of action.

Cunningham was emphatic about where her attention lay, dismissing any talk of a personal rivalry. Her sole concern, she said, was winning basketball games. The Fever arrived in Chicago looking to snap a two-game losing streak to close out a gruelling five-game road trip.
