FSV Mainz 05's long-awaited arrival in the Frauen-Bundesliga got off to the worst possible start on Sunday, as Werder Bremen snatched a 2-1 victory at the Stadion am Bruchweg.
More than 1,000 supporters packed into the ground to witness history - but Bremen ensured the celebrations were short-lived. Mei Shimada struck inside just two minutes, giving the visitors the lead before Mainz had even settled.
Isabella Jaron saw her 30th-minute penalty saved by Mainz goalkeeper Mamiko Matsumoto, only to make amends moments later by firing home in the 31st minute to double Bremen's advantage.
Saskia Matheis pulled one back for the hosts just before half-time, netting in the 44th minute to claim Mainz's first-ever Bundesliga goal - a small consolation on a tough afternoon.
Mainz earned their place in the top flight after a stunning promotion from the third-tier Regionalliga last season. The step up in quality was evident from kick-off, though.
Elsewhere on the opening weekend, VfB Stuttgart also got their campaign underway with a 2-1 win over TSG Hoffenheim, as reported by OneFootball.
