Japanese midfielder Rio Takizawa has completed her move to Mainz 05's women's side, marking the start of her first ever Bundesliga campaign. The 29-year-old arrives from SC Sand, where she spent three successful seasons, as OneFootball reports.
Takizawa's love affair with football began at just six years old, inspired by her older brother. She spent six years on her elementary school team before stepping up to Albirex Niigata - the biggest club in her home prefecture.
Following her graduation from Kanagawa University, Takizawa returned to Albirex Niigata as a professional, competing for two years in Japan's top flight. A subsequent two-year spell at AC Nagano Parceiro followed.
A two-week trip to America during university planted the seed for an overseas move. Takizawa linked up with a German-Japanese contact who helped her identify potential clubs in Germany. After distributing highlight reels, both SV Meppen and SC Sand came calling.
Her early days in Germany were anything but smooth. Language barriers and an unfamiliar rail network made life difficult. After trialling at Meppen, she embarked on a gruelling six-hour journey to Sand - unable to communicate or even buy food along the way.
Despite those initial struggles, Takizawa quickly found her feet in Sand and now looks ready for the biggest step yet.
