Simon sets sights on Europe

Bayer Leverkusen captain Carolin Simon has made her intentions clear for the new Bundesliga campaign - she wants the club competing on the international stage.

Simon, who returned to Leverkusen after collecting five league titles with FC Bayern München, believes the target is entirely realistic. Speaking ahead of this weekend's fixtures, she stressed the importance of not shying away from such ambitions.

So close last term

It's easy to see why optimism is building. Leverkusen finished fifth last season on 46 points, just missing out on the top three spots that guarantee qualification for international competition, Soccerdonna reports.

With Simon now wearing the armband, the squad will be hoping that extra experience at the very top level can push them over the line this time around.

Wolfsburg up next at home

Leverkusen have already started the season on the front foot, securing a win against RB Leipzig in their opening fixture last week. Next up is a stern test - VfL Wolfsburg visit the Ulrich-Haberland-Stadion for the club's first home match of the campaign.
