Zheng battles through rain-hit qualifier

Zheng Qinwen has booked her place in the 2026 US Open main draw after overcoming Elena Pridankina in a rain-disrupted contest that stretched across two days. The No. 14 seed eventually prevailed 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 in two hours and 19 minutes.

It was far from straightforward. Pridankina held a 5-2 advantage in the second set when rain forced a suspension. But the break proved pivotal - Zheng returned a transformed player, rattling off seven of the final eight games to seal victory in emphatic fashion.

The result marks Zheng's second successful Grand Slam qualifying campaign, underlining her impressive recovery from elbow surgery earlier in her career.

History-making teenager leads qualifiers

Zheng was not the only headline act from qualifying. Kristina Liutova, aged just 16, became the first player born in 2010 to reach a Grand Slam main draw - a remarkable milestone. Anouk Koevermans also progressed following her own rain-delayed encounter, while Storm Hunter earned her US Open main draw spot for a third time.
