1. FC Köln's women got their home campaign off to a winning start on Friday, grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over TSG Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga.
Beke Sterner proved the match-winner, converting in the 56th minute after a well-placed pass from Celina Degen to settle a tightly contested affair.
Head coach Britta Carlson was forced into three changes from the previous fixture, with injuries to Saedis Heidarsdottir and Kathrin Hendrich, plus illness ruling out Sophie Nachtigall. Degen, Taylor Ziemer and Vanessa Leimenstoll all came into the starting eleven - a remarkable reshuffle given that Köln were missing a total of eleven players.
None of that showed defensively. Pauline Bremer went closest in a goalless first half, only for Hoffenheim goalkeeper Laura Dick to produce a sharp stop. After the break, Sterner's goal changed the complexion entirely.
Hoffenheim pushed for a leveller but found Köln's backline in uncompromising form. Goalkeeper Lisa Schmitz delivered a crucial late save to preserve the clean sheet and ensure all three points stayed in Cologne.
Köln travel to the Bruchweg-Stadion next Saturday to face 1. FSV Mainz 05, as OneFootball reports.
