A heated confrontation between former NBA centre Enes Kanter Freedom and Chicago Sky guard Natasha Cloud brought Sunday night's Indiana Fever-Chicago Sky fixture to a dramatic halt.
The flashpoint came late in the third quarter. Cloud, having just scored, turned towards the baseline where Kanter was seated and began yelling and pointing at him. The Fever promptly called a timeout - but that only brought the two closer together.
Cloud walked towards Kanter, who stepped onto the court. Arena security and several Sky players quickly moved in to keep the situation from boiling over. Kanter was subsequently ejected and escorted from the playing area.
As he left, he made a point of displaying his shirt bearing the slogan: "WOMAN noun. adult human female." He spoke briefly with police officers before exiting Wintrust Arena.
The incident follows a provocative move earlier this month by Kanter and fellow former NBA player Royce White, who both declared themselves eligible for the WNBA draft, claiming to identify as women. The gesture has been widely viewed as a political statement aimed at transgender inclusion policies in women's sport.
