Wolfsburg inflict Leverkusen's first defeat

VfL Wolfsburg's women cemented their place at the summit of the Bundesliga on Sunday with a hard-fought 2:1 victory away at Bayer Leverkusen - handing their hosts a first loss of the campaign.

Ella Peddemors broke the deadlock in the 24th minute with a brilliant solo run, giving Wolfsburg a deserved lead. Selina Ostermeier hauled Leverkusen level six minutes into the second half, but the visitors were not to be denied. Cora Zicai restored Wolfsburg's advantage in the 59th minute to seal all three points.

European momentum building

The league triumph caps a strong week for Wolfsburg, who also dispatched Inter Milan 2:0 in their Champions League playoff earlier in the week. Confidence is clearly surging through the squad on both domestic and continental fronts.
