SV Werder Bremen continued their strong start to the Google Pixel Frauen-Bundesliga season with a composed 2-0 victory over RB Leipzig at the Weserstadion on Saturday, watched by 1,517 fans.
First-half headers from Mei Shimada and Julia Magerl proved decisive, as Bremen controlled proceedings against a Leipzig side weakened by injury absences and indiscipline.
Shimada opened the scoring on 22 minutes before Magerl - who only recently arrived from Leipzig - doubled the advantage in the 40th minute against her former club. Both goals came before half-time, leaving the visitors with plenty to do after the interval.
Any hopes of a Leipzig fightback were dealt a blow when Lou-Ann Joly was shown a second yellow card in the 72nd minute for persistent fouling, reducing the visitors to ten. Leipzig created several openings despite the numerical disadvantage but were unable to find a way past Bremen's defence.
Bremen boss made one enforced change from their previous outing, with Magerl stepping in for the injured Sarah Gutmann - a switch that paid off handsomely. Leipzig, meanwhile, were without captain Sandra Starke after she picked up a training injury, with Andrea Norheim drafted into the starting eleven as her replacement, OneFootball reports.
