The Subway Players Cup is ditching its old format in favour of a League Phase and Knockout Phase structure, with the first matches set for 23 September 2026.
AIThe Subway Players Cup - previously the Subway Women's League Cup - is getting a proper makeover this season. Gone is the old format. In its place? A shiny new League Phase followed by a Knockout Phase. Because why not make things more complicated and more fun at the same time?
The League Phase uses a Swiss-style format, with fixtures drawn by region. Clubs are split into Northern (11 teams) and Southern (12 teams) sections. Each side gets three home and three away matches across ten fixture windows running from mid-September to mid-December.
WSL Football CEO Nikki Doucet conducted the draw with clubs and media watching on.
Action kicks off on 23 September 2026. Everton host Birmingham City, while Liverpool welcome Sunderland. Not a bad way to start.
The top eight from the League Phase progress to the Knockout Phase, running January to March 2027. Quarter-finals land on 13-14 January, semi-finals on 10-11 February, and the final takes place over the weekend of 13-14 March 2027.
