Katharina Kiel has taken the reins as president of the Women's Bundesliga FBL e.V., the freshly established body that will steer the top tier of German women's football into an ambitious new chapter.
Kiel, who also serves as director of women's football at Eintracht Frankfurt, faces a pivotal transition period. From the 2027/28 season, the league will break away from the DFB to self-market and organise independently - a move that carries both promise and pressure.
The financial targets are striking. Kiel has outlined plans to channel between 700 and 800 million euros into the league over the next eight years, having turned down a joint venture proposal from the DFB, as reported by Soccerdonna.
Her first major hurdle arrives this autumn: negotiating new television contracts, a task previously managed entirely by the DFB. It will be the clearest early indicator of whether the league's independent model can deliver.
Beyond broadcast deals, Kiel has stressed the importance of forging a distinct identity for the competition and investing in youth development structures to secure its long-term growth.
