VfL Wolfsburg produced a remarkable comeback to thrash 1. FC Nürnberg 8-2 in their Frauen-Bundesliga season opener on Saturday. Just days after losing the Supercup to Bayern München, Stephan Lerch's side found themselves trailing by two goals before unleashing an extraordinary second-half onslaught.
Lerch made three changes to his starting XI, handing Bundesliga returnee Prasnikar a start. Nürnberg boss Omar Adlani also freshened things up with four new faces in his lineup. After a disallowed Wolfsburg goal, it was the hosts who seized the initiative - Proniez firing home a stunning effort from a corner to make it 1-0. Chances fell to Zicai and Huth, but neither could convert, and a costly error from goalkeeper Johannes gifted Nürnberg a 2-0 lead at the break.
The game pivoted on Proniez's yellow-red card early in the second half. Within moments, Bednorz brought down Zicai in the box. Minge dispatched the penalty to halve the deficit, and suddenly Wolfsburg smelled blood.
Zicai levelled the score before completing a superb hat-trick. Arasniewicz pounced on a Nürnberg defensive blunder to extend the lead, while an own goal from keeper Romero compounded the hosts' misery. Minge converted a second penalty, and late strikes from Küver and Peddemors sealed a comprehensive 8-2 victory, Kicker reports.
