Nadine Keßler has said no to Friedrich Merz. The former Germany international has turned down an offer to serve as State Minister for Sports and Community in the Chancellor's government, as reported by OneFootball.
The UEFA Director for Women's Football reportedly communicated her decision directly to the Chancellor's Office.
The rejection forces Merz to revisit his shortlist. The role became vacant after Christiane Schenderlein was moved to the health department as part of a wider cabinet reshuffle.
Interestingly, Keßler's future at UEFA itself may not be set in stone. The Women's Bundesliga is reportedly weighing her up as a candidate for the position of managing director - a role that could prove a natural fit.
Keßler's playing credentials are formidable. She claimed four German league titles across spells with Turbine Potsdam and VfL Wolfsburg, lifted the Champions League three times, and won two DFB-Pokal trophies. A European Championship winner with Germany in 2013, she earned 29 caps before injuries forced her retirement in 2016.
