SC Freiburg will head into the new Frauen-Bundesliga season without midfield lynchpin Meret Felde, who is pregnant with her second child. The 27-year-old defensive midfielder's absence is a significant blow for new head coach Marco Konrad as he shapes his squad for 2026/27.
Felde first became a mother in April 2024 and wasted little time getting back on the pitch, quickly re-establishing herself as one of the team's most important players. The club will hope for a similarly smooth return this time around.
Freiburg are not short of alternatives. Nicole Ojukwu, summer recruit Ilayda Acikgöz and Maj Schneider are all in contention to fill the void left by Felde, as Kicker reports.
Felde is not the only player Freiburg must plan without. First-choice goalkeeper Laura Benkarth and defender Ingibjörg Sigurdardottir are also expecting, leaving the club navigating three maternity-related absences simultaneously.
Area manager Birgit Bauer-Schick said the club is delighted for Felde and her growing family, adding that Freiburg are well practised at supporting players through pregnancy and parenthood.
