Germany's two dominant women's football clubs have drawn a line in the sand. Bayern Munich and VfL Wolfsburg are firmly rejecting the idea of introducing a playoff system to the Frauen-Bundesliga, setting the stage for a potentially divisive debate at an upcoming club meeting.
Bianca Rech, Bayern's director, warned that playoffs would strip value from the league and diminish the significance of the regular season. VfL Wolfsburg's Dieter Hecking backed that position, insisting such a format risked damaging the competition's integrity, as Sport1 reports.
The playoff concept has emerged from ongoing media rights negotiations. Some Bundesliga clubs see it as a tool to boost broadcast revenue and counter the perception that the league is a two-horse race between Bayern and Wolfsburg. Current media contracts deliver substantial income, but concerns linger over future earnings.
Both Rech and Hecking flagged the toll additional matches would take on players during an already congested calendar. They stressed the importance of protecting athlete welfare, particularly given both clubs' commitments to European competition. A vote on the matter could take place at the next meeting of league clubs.
