Valuation soars as Series C smashes records

Women's basketball league Unrivaled has doubled its valuation after closing a Series C funding round that exceeded all previous investment combined. The raise, led by Ten Pillar Sports Fund, blew past the league's original target and attracted heavyweight backers including former NBA star Carmelo Anthony and retired footballer Alex Morgan.

Player equity pool nears $200m

Founded by WNBA stars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, Unrivaled offers players an equity stake on top of their salaries - a model that now values the player-equity pool at close to $200 million. Most of the Season 3 roster is already locked in on multiyear contracts.

Four times the venues, coast to coast

Season 3 tips off on 8 January with a dramatically expanded tour. The league will play in four times as many venues as before, branching out from its Miami base to sites across both the East and West Coasts, as ESPN reports.

No new teams or bigger rosters are planned for the coming campaign, though expansion of roster spots is earmarked for Season 4. Unrivaled continues to broadcast under a media rights deal with TNT and is working to avoid clashes with other major sporting events.
