The Williams sisters stepped onto the court together at the Cincinnati Open on Sunday, reuniting in doubles for the first time since the 2022 US Open. For Serena, 44, it was her first competitive outing on American soil in nearly four years.
It didn't end the way the crowd would have wanted. Entering as a wild card, Serena and Venus fell to the pairing of Marta Kostyuk and Peyton Stearns 2-6, 6-1 (10-8) in a contest that was closer than it had any right to be.
After being outclassed in the opening set, the sisters roared back to take the second 6-1, forcing a match tiebreak. What followed was agonising. Kostyuk and Stearns raced to a 6-0 lead, and the match looked over - until the Williams pair clawed their way back to 8-7. A double fault from Venus, though, brought the curtain down.
Kostyuk, from Ukraine, and Cincinnati native Stearns - both 24 - were competing together for the first time. Despite their inexperience as a pair, they held their nerve when it mattered most.
Serena had returned to the professional tour this summer after stepping away in 2022. The sisters had originally planned to play doubles at Wimbledon earlier this year but were forced to pull out after Serena sustained a knee injury during her singles match.
