An official ceremony celebrating Mainz 05's women's promotion has drawn fierce criticism after 15 players who helped earn it were left uninvited.

What should have been a proud moment for Mainz 05's women's team turned sour after 15 former players who helped secure the club's promotion were left off the guest list for an official ceremony at Mainz City Hall. To make matters worse, several players who only joined the squad after promotion had already been achieved were among those honoured at the event.
Heiðrún Sigurðardóttir, the captain who steered the side to promotion, took to social media to voice her anger. She questioned why players with no role in the achievement were celebrated while those who made it happen were ignored, as Soccerdonna reports.
Mainz 05 have conceded the ceremony was poorly handled. Many of those excluded only discovered the event through social media, receiving no direct communication from the club until just three days beforehand. The club has since issued an apology.
Working alongside the city of Mainz, the club now intends to organise a fresh date so that all affected players can be properly recognised and entered into the city's prestigious Gold Book.
