Sabalenka tops WTA despite UTR challenge

Sabalenka holds firm at the summit

Aryna Sabalenka remains firmly planted at the top of the WTA Rankings following the conclusion of the Canadian Open, extending her reign to an impressive 95 consecutive weeks since first claiming the spot in October 2024.

Alternative rankings tell a different story

While Sabalenka's official standing is unchallenged, the Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) system paints a slightly different picture. The UTR evaluates players using an algorithm that weighs match results from the past 12 months and the most recent 30 matches, with particular emphasis on performances against higher-ranked opponents.

Post-Toronto, Sabalenka's UTR has slipped to 13.07 - narrowly behind Marta Kostyuk, who leads on 13.08. Elena Rybakina sits third at 13.05, with Coco Gauff fourth on 12.98.
