Amanda Anisimova claimed her second top-20 scalp of 2026 with a hard-fought 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Alexandra Eala at the Cincinnati Open on Monday.
It was far from straightforward. Eala took the opening set after breaking back and seizing control in the latter stages, showing exactly why she sits inside the world's top 20.
But Anisimova responded with composure. A crucial break in the second set swung momentum her way, levelling the match and forcing a decider.
Eala looked dangerous early in the third, but Anisimova flipped a switch - reeling off five consecutive games to slam the door shut and book her spot in the next round.
It was a statement performance from the American, who now faces Linda Noskova in what promises to be another testing encounter.
Despite the defeat, Eala has plenty to look forward to. The Filipino star will head to New York for the US Open, where she is entered in both women's singles and mixed doubles alongside Felix Auger-Aliassime. She is also set to feature in the Stars of the Open exhibition event during Fan Week.
