Dominant display ends early

Alex Eala stormed into the third round of the 2026 Cincinnati Open on Saturday after Elena-Gabriela Ruse was forced to retire with an ankle injury. The Filipino star was firmly in control at 6-1, 3-0 when the match came to a premature end.

Eala's ruthless opening set

After an even start that saw both players trade breaks in the first two games, Eala seized command. She held serve to edge ahead 2-1 and then reeled off six straight games to claim the opener 6-1 in devastating fashion.

Ruse unable to continue

The second set followed the same script, with Eala racing to a 3-0 lead before Ruse called for medical attention on her ankle. A brief lightning delay further disrupted proceedings, and Ruse ultimately decided she could not carry on.

Tough test awaits

Eala now faces a significant step up in opposition. Amanda Anisimova - the ninth seed and world No. 10 - is next after she dispatched Zeynep Sönmez in the previous round. A win there would be a statement result for Eala, who is already projected to reach a new career-high ranking of world No. 17 following this victory.
