Venus and Serena Williams came agonisingly close to a first-round doubles victory at the Cincinnati Open, only to be denied in a dramatic tie-break by Marta Kostyuk and Peyton Stearns.
The sisters were comprehensively outplayed in the opening set, going down 6-2. What followed, though, was vintage Williams grit - they stormed through the second set 6-1, levelling the contest and setting up a winner-takes-all tie-break.
Things looked bleak at 8-2 down in the decider, but the pair reeled off five straight points to close the gap to 8-7. It was not quite enough. Kostyuk and Stearns steadied themselves to clinch it 10-8.
The result comes amid growing intrigue over Serena's plans for the upcoming US Open. Her only competitive singles outing since her emotional farewell at Flushing Meadows four years ago was a wildcard appearance at the All England Club earlier this summer, which ended in a three-set loss.
Venus has already secured a wildcard for the US Open, with one final spot still to be announced - fuelling speculation that Serena could follow her sister into the draw.
