Fudd's season over after knee setback

Azzi Fudd's debut WNBA campaign is done. The Dallas Wings confirmed their first overall pick will undergo an arthroscopic procedure to address persistent soreness in her right knee, ruling her out for the remainder of the season.

Tough timing for a team on the edge

The Wings can ill afford to lose anyone right now. Dallas have dropped eight of their last eleven matches and are clinging to the final playoff berth with just eight games left on the schedule. Fudd's absence only deepens those concerns.

Laksa drafted in as replacement

Enter Kitija Laksa. The Latvian guard has been signed on a rest-of-season deal to fill the gap. Crucially, she already has a relationship with Wings head coach Jose Fernandez, having played under him at the University of South Florida.

Laksa was selected 11th overall by the Seattle Storm back in 2020 but didn't make her WNBA debut until 2025. Last season she featured in 33 games for the Phoenix Mercury, including two playoff appearances - exactly the kind of experience Dallas need down the stretch.

Questions linger over Fudd's future

Fudd's injury inevitably raises awkward questions about the Wings' decision to take her with the top pick. Still, her talent is undeniable, and the franchise will be banking on her long-term potential when she returns healthy.
