Former NBA centre Enes Kanter Freedom was thrown out of a WNBA match on Sunday night after clashing with Chicago Sky guard Natasha Cloud during the third quarter at Wintrust Arena.
Freedom had turned up courtside wearing a T-shirt bearing the slogan "WOMAN noun. adult human female" - a phrase widely associated with debates around transgender inclusion in women's sport.
Cloud approached Freedom during the third quarter, sparking an intense verbal exchange. Freedom rose to his feet and responded before arena security stepped in and escorted him out of the building.
Freedom wasted no time taking to social media, insisting he had been removed simply for "supporting women." He has since made appearances across multiple media platforms to discuss the incident.
Cloud, meanwhile, declined to speak to the press after the game. Instead, she posted a message of solidarity with the trans community online: "You belong. You're loved. You're seen. You're perfect as you are."
The confrontation has thrust the ongoing row over transgender athletes in women's sport back into the spotlight, with both figures attracting vocal support and criticism in equal measure.
