Mainzer Frauen step onto the biggest stage in German women's football on Monday, launching their very first Google Pixel Frauen-Bundesliga campaign. The milestone follows their promotion from the 2. Frauen-Bundesliga back in May - and the squad has been laying the groundwork ever since.
Pre-season training began in late June, with the squad heading to Hopfgarten, Austria, for a dedicated training camp. Twelve new faces have joined the ranks, among them Saskia Matheis, who arrived from SV Werder Bremen.
Matheis highlighted the intensity of the build-up, pointing to noticeable improvements in team cohesion and tactical understanding on the pitch.
Blending so many newcomers into an existing group is never straightforward. Matheis admitted it takes time for relationships to form, but credited the established players for making the transition smoother. Excitement in the camp is palpable - for many in the squad, competing at Bundesliga level is the fulfilment of a lifelong ambition.
