González swaps NWSL for Saudi Arabia

World Cup winner heads to Saudi Arabia

Spanish striker Esther González has completed a move to Al-Qadsiah in the Saudi Women's Premier League. The 33-year-old penned a one-season deal with the option of extending for a further year, as Soccerdonna reports.

González departed Gotham FC at the end of July after her contract was terminated early due to personal reasons in Spain. Her spell with the NWSL side, which began in August 2023, proved remarkably productive - she became Gotham's all-time leading scorer with 30 goals across 64 competitive outings.

Decorated career

Last season alone, she bagged 13 league goals, finishing as the NWSL's second-highest scorer. She also claimed two NWSL Championship titles in 2023 and 2025, plus the Concacaf W Champions Cup.

Before heading stateside, González spent two years at Real Madrid, where she set the club's scoring record with 39 goals. Earlier stints at Levante (2019-2021) and Atlético Madrid (2013-2019) saw her win three consecutive Spanish league titles with Atlético.

Internationally, she was part of Spain's 2023 World Cup-winning squad, helped defend the UEFA Women's Nations League title in 2025, and topped the Euro 2025 scoring charts with four goals.

New chapter at Al-Qadsiah

Al-Qadsiah finished fourth in the most recent Saudi Women's Premier League season. The club are now managed by Giles Barnes, formerly assistant coach at Orlando Pride.
