Women's football hits the virtual pitch

Football Manager has finally done it. Women's football is now part of the game, and yes, you can sign, scout and haggle over contracts with over 12,000 female players spread across 14 leagues. About time, really.

A database five years in the making

Sports Interactive kicked off work on the women's database back in 2021. Gathering accurate data proved trickier than expected - even basic player details were hard to come by. The team ended up reaching out directly to people within the women's game just to fill in the gaps.

Keeping it real (mostly)

A 40-strong research squad has been dedicated to making the experience authentic. Contract lengths and injury recovery timescales have been adjusted to reflect genuine differences between the men's and women's game. One detail deliberately left out? Player weight. Deemed pointless for gameplay, it got the chop.

Could a video game create coaches?

Here's the fun bit. Football Manager has a track record of nudging people towards actual coaching careers. The hope now is that adding women's football could do the same for aspiring female coaches. A pipeline from sofa to touchline - stranger things have happened.

Scouting beyond the screen

Sports Interactive already shares its data with clubs for real-world scouting, as reported by OneFootball. There are ambitions to help national teams uncover overlooked talent too - particularly useful for nations working with tight budgets who might not realise which players qualify to represent them.
