Parma Calcio midfielder Gina Chmielinski faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee. The 26-year-old picked up the injury during a pre-season friendly against Vicenza Women, having started the match.
Chmielinski is set to go under the knife in the coming weeks before beginning what promises to be a gruelling rehabilitation programme. Parma have yet to put a timeline on her return, as Soccerdonna reports. The club is filming a dedicated video series documenting her road to recovery.
The blow is particularly harsh given Chmielinski only completed a move from RB Leipzig to Parma in mid-July, penning a deal through to 2028. She had returned to Italian football after previous spells with Napoli and Sassuolo in Serie A.
On social media, Chmielinski revealed she had never suffered a serious injury across 23 years of playing the sport - making this setback all the more devastating as she looked to settle into her new surroundings.
