Sixteen-year-old qualifier Kristina Liutova progressed at the Memphis Tennis Classic after top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova collapsed on court and retired from their three-hour first-round encounter.
Top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova suffered a dramatic on-court collapse during her first-round match at the Memphis Tennis Classic, bringing a gruelling three-hour contest to a premature end.
The Russian was trailing 5-4 in the deciding set against 16-year-old qualifier Kristina Liutova when she went down. After a lengthy stoppage for medical treatment, Alexandrova was forced to retire - handing the teenager a historic victory.
For Liutova, it was a breakthrough moment. The Ukrainian-born youngster, currently ranked world No. 229, became only the second player born in 2010 to claim a tour-level win - putting her comfortably ahead of her peers from the same birth year.
It was also her first appearance in the main draw of a WTA event, and she seized the opportunity in emphatic fashion.
Liutova will face American Maya Joint in the Round of 16, looking to extend what has already been a remarkable run in Memphis.
