Becky Sauerbrunn is heading back to the Portland Thorns - but this time, she's swapping boots for a clipboard. The former defender has been brought on as a technical consultant for the remainder of the season, as reported by AP.
It's a fitting return for a player who helped the Thorns clinch the NWSL title in 2022. Sauerbrunn first joined the club in 2020 and racked up 189 league appearances across her career before hanging up her boots in 2024.
Few defenders in NWSL history can match Sauerbrunn's CV. She won Defender of the Year four times and lifted three league championships. On the international stage, she featured in three World Cups and three Olympics for the US national team, collecting a gold medal in 2012.
Sauerbrunn herself said the consultancy role lets her dive into tactics and detail without the physical toll of playing - something she's clearly relishing.
General manager Jeff Agoos praised the appointment, saying Sauerbrunn's knowledge and experience will be invaluable to the team's development and competitive push.
Beyond football, Sauerbrunn has been a powerful voice for equality. She served as president of the US Women's National Team Players Association and was instrumental in securing the landmark 2022 equal pay agreement with US Soccer.
