Nighswonger returns to NWSL with Bay FC

Back stateside with a point to prove

Jenna Nighswonger's European adventure is over - and the American midfielder is wasting no time plotting her next move. The 2023 NWSL Rookie of the Year has penned a deal with Bay FC through 2028, worth a reported $200,000, as Sports Illustrated reports.

A rough ride in England

Nighswonger arrived at Arsenal in 2025 off the back of a glittering debut campaign with Gotham FC, where she helped the club clinch its maiden NWSL title. But the WSL proved a tough nut to crack. She managed just six appearances for Arsenal and a further eight on loan at Aston Villa - hardly the impact she'd envisioned.

Why Bay FC?

The move brings Nighswonger closer to her family in Southern California, a factor she's spoken warmly about. She's also been vocal about the club's culture and its commitment to developing players, praising the coaching setup at Bay FC.

Eyes on the 2027 World Cup

The bigger picture here is clear. Nighswonger wants back into the U.S. Women's National Team fold ahead of the 2027 FIFA World Cup. She's no stranger to the setup - 20 caps to her name and a 2024 Olympic gold medal in the trophy cabinet. Regular minutes at Bay FC could be exactly what she needs to force her way back in.
