Pietra Tordin bagged her first career hat-trick as Portland Thorns survived a dramatic Boston Legacy fightback to win 4-3 in the season's highest-scoring NWSL clash.
AIPietra Tordin announced herself in emphatic fashion on Sunday, hammering a hat-trick as the Portland Thorns edged the Boston Legacy 4-3 in a breathless encounter at Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. It was the first-ever meeting between the two sides - and it didn't disappoint.
The 22-year-old struck after just two minutes, and Sophia Wilson doubled the lead four minutes later. When Jessie Fleming picked off a stray pass to set up Tordin's second, Portland were cruising at 3-0.
Bianca St-Georges pulled one back for Boston in the 31st minute, but Tordin restored the three-goal cushion almost immediately - becoming the youngest player in Thorns history to bag a treble. She now leads the NWSL with 15 goals this season.
Things got spicy when Portland boss Robert Vilahamn was ejected in the 58th minute for deliberately knocking a dead ball away from play. Boston sensed blood. Alba Caño and Amanda Gutierres both found the net in the second half to drag the Legacy within a single goal, but the Thorns held firm in what became the highest-scoring NWSL match of the campaign, AP reports.
Elsewhere, Angel City FC clawed back a 2-2 draw against the Seattle Reign. Gisele Thompson had given Angel City an early lead in the 32nd minute before Sally Menti equalised and then teed up Mia Fishel to put Seattle ahead. Evelyn Shores found Prisca Chilufya in the 72nd minute to level things up.
In Evanston, Illinois, Bay FC and the Chicago Stars played out a goalless draw - despite three goals being disallowed for offside. Chicago had one ruled out in the 26th minute; Bay saw two scrubbed later on.
