Lightning start for Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen made it two wins from two this season with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over TSG Hoffenheim in the Frauen-Bundesliga. It was a first outing without Carlotta Wamser, whose record-breaking move to Manchester City left a gap to fill - but Bayer wasted no time proving they could cope.

Loreen Bender set the tone inside two minutes, giving Leverkusen the lead before Hoffenheim had time to settle. Marie Steiner pulled the hosts level in the 21st minute, but substitute Paulina Tomasiak restored Bayer's advantage with a 68th-minute strike.

Late drama and a record transfer

The closing stages brought nerves for the visitors. Sofie Zdebel picked up a second yellow card in the 82nd minute, leaving Leverkusen to see out the result with ten players. They held firm, though, condemning Hoffenheim to another pointless evening.

Meanwhile, Wamser's departure to Manchester City - reportedly worth around 650,000 euros including bonuses - stands as the most expensive transfer in Bundesliga women's history. A statement move for both club and player.
