Fernandez eases past Linette in Washington

Defending champion Leylah Fernandez made light work of Magda Linette in the opening round of the Mubadala DC Open, cruising to a 6-1, 6-4 victory in just one hour and 19 minutes.

The Canadian, seeded seventh, was imperious on serve - landing 71% of her first deliveries and converting 74% of those into points won. Remarkably, she conceded only eight points on serve until the penultimate game.

A familiar position

This is the third occasion Fernandez has entered a tournament as defending champion, and she insists her mindset is firmly attack-first rather than protective. She will next face either Alexandra Eala or Zheng Qinwen.

Venus Williams' ongoing encouragement

Off the court, Fernandez continues to enjoy a warm bond with Venus Williams. The pair teamed up in doubles at last year's US Open, reaching the quarter-finals, before suffering a first-round exit at the Miami Open.

Though their partnership may not resume - with Williams widely expected to reunite with sister Serena at the US Open - Venus still sends messages of support after Fernandez's matches. Fernandez has spoken openly about how much that encouragement lifts her during difficult moments.
