It had been a long time coming. NJ/NY Gotham FC had managed to beat Kansas City Current in the NWSL Challenge Cup before, but a regular-season victory over the Current had always eluded them - until now.
In a fittingly theatrical encounter on Broadway Night, Gotham came from behind to seal a 2-1 win at home, as OneFootball reports.
Kansas City struck first, but Gotham hit back through Midge Purce before Sam Kerr delivered the decisive blow. Kerr's goal was more than just a match-winner - it made her the all-time leading regular-season scorer in Gotham FC history.
The 27th minute brought a flashpoint. A confrontation in the box saw Elizabeth Ball initially shown a straight red card for pushing Jordynn Dudley. However, after a VAR review, the decision was downgraded to a yellow - a call that divided opinion.
