WAFCON heroes light up NWSL return

Spirit roll out the red carpet

WAFCON wrapped up in mid-August, and the returning stars are already making waves back in the NWSL. Matchweek 19 delivered debuts, goals, and one very emotional homecoming.

Washington Spirit set the tone before their clash with Bay FC, honouring every player from both squads who featured at the continental showpiece - Deborah Abiodun, Gift Monday, Rosemonde Kouassi, Monique Ngock, Mélissa Bethi, and Bay's Racheal Kundananji all received recognition.

History-making debuts

Ngock and Bethi then stepped onto the pitch for their first competitive appearances in Spirit colours. Ngock, who joined the club just before jetting off to WAFCON, returned as a champion with Cameroon. Bethi, meanwhile, wrote her own chapter - becoming the first Algerian ever to feature in the NWSL, as NWSL reports.

Banda keeps firing

Orlando's Barbra Banda has barely paused for breath. She netted on her return in Matchweek 18 and followed it up with another strike against Utah Royals, pushing her season tally to 13. The Zambian forward bagged five goals at WAFCON - and clearly brought that form home with her.

Chawinga's triumphant return

The biggest reception, though, was reserved for Temwa Chawinga. The WAFCON Golden Boot winner touched down in Kansas City to a hero's welcome from adoring fans. Her tournament numbers - five goals, two assists - helped Malawi reach the final and seal a historic first-ever World Cup qualification.
