Janine Sonis is having the time of her life - and the numbers back it up. The forward netted in the 13th minute of Denver Summit's recent clash with Chicago, taking her tally to nine goals for the campaign - more than any other player on the roster.
For a franchise in its inaugural NWSL season, that kind of individual output is gold dust.
Sonis has been open about what this season means to her, calling it the most fulfilling of her career. Playing for her hometown side, she says, brings a joy that's hard to replicate - and the passionate local support at matches has only amplified that feeling.
Denver Summit's record of seven wins, six draws and eight losses leaves them hovering just outside the playoff places. It's been a season of highs and lows, but Sonis insists the squad's focus is firmly on pushing into contention in the remaining fixtures.
She also praised the team culture that's been built from scratch, and singled out teammate Lindsey Heaps for her influence on the group's dynamic, as The Guardian reports.
Two highlights stand out for Sonis this season: a decisive free-kick that sealed victory against Utah Royals, and the thrill of playing at Colorado Rapids Stadium - a venue where she once competed in high school championships. Full circle, indeed.
