Marta Kostyuk wasted no time making her mark at Flushing Meadows, sweeping past Australian qualifier Storm Hunter 6-4, 6-1 in a match lasting just 67 minutes. The Ukrainian raced to a 4-1 advantage in the opener before a Hunter double fault on set point handed her the first set. The second was even more emphatic - Kostyuk broke early and never looked back.
Fellow Ukrainian Elina Svitolina was arguably more impressive still, dismantling Argentina's Solana Sierra 6-1, 6-2 in a brisk 51 minutes. The ninth seed - a 2019 US Open semi-finalist - looked sharp from the outset, underlining the form that has carried her to 43 match wins this season.
Kostyuk now awaits the winner of the clash between 2017 champion Sloane Stephens and Clara Tauson. Svitolina's second-round opponent is yet to be confirmed.
