Gauff cruises into last eight

World No. 4 Coco Gauff barely broke a sweat as she dismantled Alina Korneeva 6-3, 6-1 to reach the quarterfinals of the National Bank Open in Toronto. It is her first appearance at this stage of the tournament in three years.

Gauff's form has been imperious. She is yet to drop a set, and her tally of just four lost games across the opening three rounds represents the best start she has ever made at this event.

Her next opponent will be the winner of the night session clash between Belinda Bencic and Alexandra Eala.

Rybakina digs deep

Elena Rybakina had a far tougher evening. She needed three sets to see off Liudmila Samsonova, prevailing 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 after falling 0-3 behind in the decider. A quarterfinal meeting with Naomi Osaka - who beat home favourite Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-4 - now awaits.

Korneeva's run ends

For Korneeva, this was a first career encounter with a top-10 player. She arrived on the back of impressive wins over No. 23 seed Emma Navarro and No. 13 seed Iva Jovic, but found Gauff a step too far.

Milestone territory

The victory carries historical weight. Gauff becomes only the second player since 1990 to chalk up 25 or more Tier I/WTA 1000 quarterfinals before turning 23, joining Martina Hingis in an exclusive club. It is also her fourth Canadian Open quarterfinal - two in Toronto, two in Montreal.
