History beckons for Ryu

Haeran Ryu is on the brink of something extraordinary. The South Korean fired a blistering 5-under 66 in the opening round at Royal Lytham and St Annes to seize a one-shot lead at the AIG Women's Open.

Win here, and she completes a staggering three consecutive major victories in just three starts. Let that sink in.

A run like no other

Ryu's recent form borders on absurd. She claimed her maiden major at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship after overturning a 10-shot deficit following round one. She then torched the field at the Amundi Evian Championship, posting a 60 - the lowest single round in major championship history.

Now she wants more. And frankly, nobody looks capable of stopping her.

Big names left trailing

Ryu shared the opening round with Nelly Korda and Lydia Ko - hardly shabby company. Korda, winner of the season's first two majors, could only manage a 73. Ko fared slightly better with a 71. Neither came close to matching Ryu's brilliance.

All three are grouped together again for the second round, teeing off in the afternoon. Charley Hull is also among the 144 players in action on Friday.
