Former champion ruled out of Flushing Meadows

Emma Raducanu will miss the 2026 US Open after confirming she is still recovering from a stress fracture in her lower right leg - an injury that has sidelined her since before Wimbledon.

The 2021 champion initially believed the problem was minor, but further assessment revealed the more serious diagnosis. Her medical team has insisted she needs additional recovery time before returning to competitive action.

Recovery showing promise

Raducanu has offered glimpses of her rehabilitation on social media, posting footage of herself hitting balls while wearing a protective boot. More encouragingly, she has recently been spotted training in Switzerland, suggesting real progress.

A brutal season of setbacks

The stress fracture is merely the latest blow in a punishing 2026 campaign. Raducanu has also battled foot bone bruising and a post-viral illness that kept her out for more than two months. Her ranking has consequently slid to world No. 49.

Missing Flushing Meadows carries particular emotional weight. It was there, five years ago, that a teenage Raducanu stunned the tennis world by winning the title as a qualifier. She has spoken of her sadness at being unable to return this year.
