Naomi Osaka showed her trademark fighting spirit to overcome Katerina Siniakova 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 at the US Open on Wednesday, booking her place in the third round after a rollercoaster two hours and two minutes on court.
The 13th seed looked in complete control early on, breezing through the opener and building a 5-3 advantage in the second set. Then came the collapse - three consecutive broken service games saw Siniakova claw the set back and level the contest.
Whatever mental reset Osaka performed between sets clearly worked. She stormed through the decider 6-1, reasserting the dominance that had characterised her opening salvo. Remarkably, she had not faced a single break point across her first seven service games before the mid-match meltdown.
It continues a strong Grand Slam season for the former world No. 1, who has now reached the third round at all four majors in 2026. This marks her eighth time progressing this far at Flushing Meadows in ten main-draw appearances - a quietly impressive record, as Sky Sports reports.
Her first-round victory over world No. 101 Anastasia Zakharova had required two tiebreaks, with Osaka admitting to nerves. She will hope for a smoother ride next time out against 20th seed Elise Mertens, who defeated Maria Timofeeva to set up the clash. It will be the pair's tenth encounter since 2017.
